Illinois Social Emotional Learning student standards for grades K-12 were adopted as a result of the 2003 Children’s Mental Health Act. The 10 SEL standards, along with state specific goals, age-appropriate benchmarks, and performance descriptors, were a collaborative effort between ISBE and the Illinois Children’s Mental Health Partnership with technical support from the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL). Resources and tools for integration of SEL standards at the classroom, school and/or district level are provided on this page.

Social Emotional Lesson resources
Overcoming Obstacles - The website offers a FREE curriculum for building the foundational skills of Communication, Decision making and Goal Setting. The curriculum is organized into elementary, middle, and high school levels. Educators can choose to follow the path set out within the curriculum or use the "modules" to target specific lessons to fit a identified need for individual classrooms or groups of students. The activities are collaborative and engaging throughout the levels. Educators can also look at lower and upper level items to differentiate lessons. The curriculum is available in Spanish as well as English. (The student activity sheets are translated into 20 different languages as well.) Educators will need to register to access the curriculum and will receive emails about updates as they are added to the website. (There is NOT an abundance of emails.)
Heroes Among Us - Character Development Lessons and guides provided by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation. Educators can create an account to access grade level specific content and activities for kindergarten through sixth grade on courage, commitment, integrity, sacrifice, citizenship, and patriotism into language and behavior that children can comprehend and embrace. Positive role models demonstrate how we can all choose to be our personal best. Middle and high school appropriate content features non-fiction accounts of Medal of Honor Recipients' and citizen heroes' actions. Assignments for individual and group work, assessment suggestions, and extended activities guide educators and students through this character resource. Videos are moving and geared towards speaking to student populations, making connections to concepts that matter.
